The position is primarily responsible for the care, maintenance and renovation of landscaped areas throughout the park. It also assists with the opening and closing of graves and the maintenance of the graves and mausoleums on occasion as needed per established company policies and practices.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

GENERAL

  • Assuring that work areas, working conditions and work habits are as safe as possible at all times.

  • Keeping immediate supervisors promptly and fully informed of all problems or unusual matters of significance.

  • Remain flexible from day to day and accept assignment changes as needed to best respond to the changing needs of the business. At times, landscape projects may need to be placed on hold to respond to surges in demand for interment services.

  • Perform duties as directed by Management.

  • As an Operator, actively coach and help train newer team members to develop our collective skill set and maximize our flexibility, capacity and value.

LANDSCAPE

  • Assist with the ongoing renovation of landscaped areas throughout the park to maintain Rose Hills’ property in an attractive manner at all times.

  • Use basic gardening hand tools such as shovels, rakes, clippers, loppers, cultivators, hoes, etc. as needed to complete assigned work in a timely manner.

  • Use power equipment to increase productivity and complete assignments. Power equipment should only be used if specialist is specifically trained and authorized to use it in accordance with all applicable safety policies and procedures.

  • Apply fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, etc. as needed using safe application techniques and appropriate personal protective equipment in accordance with any applicable laws and regulations.

  • Continually inspect cemetery grounds to identify landscape program opportunities and deficiencies. Report observations to park management team for resolution.

  • Posses a basic knowledge of plant identification and continually strive to enhance that knowledge to include trees, shrubs, flowers, ground cover and invasive plants (i.e. weeds, thistle, etc.).

  • Posses a basic knowledge of proper horticulture maintenance techniques and apply that knowledge daily to ensure landscape assets are maintained in such a way as to ensure maximum aesthetic value and a neat, orderly appearance.

  • Understand basic irrigation systems from the valve box to the sprinkler head. Perform minor system adjustments and report larger issues to irrigation team.

  • Operate machinery as required to complete assignments including pick-up trucks, dump trucks, backhoes, skip loaders and specialty equipment such as the Gator mini dump, trenching machine, etc. Machinery should only be used if Operator is specifically trained and authorized to use it in accordance with all applicable safety policies and procedures.

  • Work independently with a small team to accomplish landscape renovation projects on time and within budget.

  • Provide leadership and direction to contracted employees who may be assigned to the landscape team from time to time to meet project goals and timelines.

  • Participate in project planning and material sourcing activities that must be mastered for ongoing skill development and career progression.

  • Demonstrate continuous improvement and skill development through ongoing training and education.

INTERMENT

  • Setting up for interments.

  • Locate grave locations anywhere within the Park.

  • Locate crypts or niche location anywhere in the Mausoleums.

  • Open and close an urn gravesite by use of hand tools (spade).

  • Peel sod using a spade, so the sod can be replanted.

  • Install flower vases.

  • Prepare soil and lay sod to finish graves.

  • Safely access and exit a pick-up truck on a cemetery lawn.

  • Safely use truck/trailer to empty trash barrels using an efficient routing system.

  • Read and understanding of information printed on the Interment List/Cards.

  • Safe use of required hand tools when opening and closing crypts.

  • Safe operation of a Mausoleum Lift (hoist).

  • Safely use required hand tools when opening and closing a niche.

  • Roll sod and place dirt sheets in the proper locations.

  • Direct and guide the digger during digging operations.

  • Set up and level grave boards at the interment site.

  • Determine the appropriate width and depth dimensions for the vault.

  • Set-up and install vault lowering devices.

  • Dig wells within the grave at appropriate depth for vault cables.

  • Square corners and sides of grave using a spade.

  • Open stupa memorials at the IBPS Columbarium.

  • Properly align marker for installation through use of a string.

  • Install a grave marker.

  • Safely access and operate a truck on a cemetery lawn.

  • Safely operate a truck or tractor/trailer to remove flowers from gravesites.

  • Repair sunken graves.

  • Safely operate a tent-truck on cemetery lawn.

  • Quickly set-up/break-down tent frames and canopies.

  • Safely access and exit a greens truck onto a cemetery lawn.

  • Set-up chairs at gravesites.

  • Identify, locate, and read lot blocks.

  • Safely lower vaults and placement and seal vault lids.

  • Effectively communicate to co-workers using the radio.

  • Properly remove markers from an interment site without damaging the marker.

  • Use a T-Tamp to compact soil.

  • Safely use a vault lid lowering device (dolly).

  • Safely operate a Tractor or other appropriate equipment to dig urn graves.

  • Safely operate a tractor and tow a dirt trailer on a cemetery lawn.

  • Identify and locate irrigation lines using maps and lot blocks.

  • Safely dump dirt from dirt trailer.

  • Safely use a backhoe to enter and exit a cemetery lawn.

  • Safely operate sod peeling equipment to produce square cuts at 2 inches deep.

  • Print Interment Orders and Interment Lists from AS400 computer system.

  • Repair and shore caved-in gravesites.

  • Repair broken or cracked vaults.

  • Knowledge of Rose Hills Park marker restrictions.

  • Perform pre-service "checking" procedures of interment sites.

  • Establish an efficient checking route.

  • Effectively communicate with families, co-workers and funeral director staff.

  • Safely tow a compressor (forward and reverse) on a cemetery lawn or street.

  • Safely operate a backhoe to backfill graves.

  • Safely operate a backhoe to backfill graves on steep/hillside grade.

  • Safely operate a backhoe to backfill graves in wet or rainy conditions.

  • Safely operate an air compressor and air tamp.

  • Safely use hoe-pak to compact soil.

  • Serve as a back-up for the Base Station.

  • Close a stupa memorial at the IBPS Columbarium.

  • Understand and achieve annual SMART goals.

  • Participate in training and skill development opportunities to improve competency and customer service.

  • Report to work on time and maintain standard attendance.

  • Work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision.

  • Actively franchise knowledge, experience and skill set to newer team members through example, training, observation and feedback.

Experience and Education:

  • 24 to 30 months as an Interment Specialist or Landscape Specialist or equivalent.

  • Exhibit operational proficiency on all equipment normally used in this position.

  • Good mechanical skills and ability to perform minor adjustments and repairs.

  • Requires a valid California Drivers License.

Special Skills

Horticulture and rose plant maintenance skills

Working Environment

Perform heavy physical labor out-of-doors in all weather conditions; must be able to work with dirt, dust, and mud; work with a variety of powered equipment and vibrating machinery with moderate to loud noise, and on sometimes steep hillsides; cope with a high volume of work and with constantly changing priorities and interruptions; and flexible availability is required to work occasional overtime and outside of normally scheduled work hours.

Physical Requirements

Perform heavy physical labor daily out-of-doors in all weather conditions; use and operate a variety of hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment; stand, walk, sit, lift and carry up to 100# (sometimes without the assistance of power equipment) push, pull, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crawl while performing essential functions; maintain footing on steep hillsides and wet grass; physical effort requiring manual dexterity (i.e. between 75% and 90% of time on the job); interact with all types of personalities within and outside the Company.
