Provides oversight and accountability for services: care (cemetery) maintenance, utilities management, crematory (retort) management, and facilities maintenance services for all SCI locations. Will have oversight of a team of supply chain buyers responsible for these spend categories in support of SCI’s 1900 locations in 44 states, eight Canadian provinces, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.


Land Care Maintenance

  • Responsible for the development and management of strategic vision, vendor relationships, standards, tools and tracking to aide our operational teams in efficiently maintaining land care at our locations and upholding the standards expected by our client families.

  • Responsible for the overall land care management of over 30,000 acres of land in 400 cemetery and funeral home locations within 89 different markets.

  • Develops and manages strategic relationships with Land Care providers to supply land care services for SCI funeral homes and cemeteries. This includes managing the RFP processes and the actual vendor management oversight in support of the locations.

  • Oversees the periodic land care program reviews to review and assess insourcing vs outsourcing to maintain the most cost effective land care management program of each location.

  • The identification and management of heavy equipment purchases and leases required to support land care and internments at SCI cemeteries.

Facilities Maintenance

  • Responsible for the development and management of strategic vision, vendor relationships, standards, tools and tracking to maintain SCI’s facilities.

  • Oversees facility maintenance program for SCI’s funeral homes and cemetery facilities. This includes the identification of facility maintenance standards, guidelines and vendor management processes.

  • Currently there are over 2700 vendors approved to provide maintenance and repair services to the 1900 SCI locations. Implement a system to manage and track work orders and maintenance

  • Responsible for the development and maintenance the program/system to provide scheduled maintenance, preventative maintenance, ad hoc service requests, asset tracking, etc.

  • Directs the establishment and implementation of procurement policies to effectively monitor and control corporate assets.

Utilities Management

  • Oversees the development and execution of the utility management program for SCI’s funeral homes and cemeteries. This includes electricity, natural gas, and water.

  • Managing the energy management vendors and systems used to negotiate and manage utility spend.

  • Identifying and implementing energy savings solutions in cooperation with location management teams and our corporate development teams. These include alternative energy, solar power and water conservation tools and systems as determined by executive management.

  • The annual spend for utilities is roughly $52M with over 9K utility accounts.

Crematory Management

  • Oversees facility maintenance program for SCI’s cremators/retorts. This includes the identification of facility maintenance standards, guidelines and vendor management processes.

  • Manages the complete life cycle management of retorts which includes acquisition, maintenance, re-use and retire. The current inventory includes approximately 315 cremation units.

  • Identifies and implement opportunities to control costs / manage demand for retorts.

MINIMUM Requirements


  • Bachelor Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, Supply Chain or a related discipline

  • MBA preferred


  • Ten (10) years experience in managing a merchandising, sourcing/procurement team in a complex retail type environment

  • Experienced with land care and facilities management in a distributed retail environment

  • 5 years experience at SCI preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of SCI’s financial reporting and operational models

  • Background in horticulture or land care is not mandatory but preferred

  • Strong negotiation skills with a collaborative style of management with both vendors and SCI associates

  • Strong analytical and deductive reasoning skills

  • Effective and efficient communication skills with all levels of management and variety of external resources

  • Organizational skills, time management and project management skills to handle detailed work with multiple concurrent priorities and constituents

  • Detail-oriented, flexible and creative

  • Work collaboratively to build positive/effective business partnerships

  • Demonstrated strategic thinking resulting in high-value process improvements

  • Familiar with Microsoft Office Applications to include, Word, Excel, Visio and PowerPoint

  • Ability to travel
