Work below surface of water, using scuba gear to inspect, repair, remove, or install equipment and structures. May use a variety of power and hand tools, such as drills, sledgehammers, torches, and welding equipment. May conduct tests and experiments or photograph structures and marine life.

JOB Responsibilities

Equipment Maintenance

  • Check and maintain diving equipment such as helmets, masks, air tanks, harnesses and gauges

  • Inspect and test docks, ships, buoyage systems, reef intakes and outflows, and underwater cables, and sewers, using closed circuit television, still photography, and testing equipment

Community Relations

  • Work with universities, trade associations, visitors bureaus, DERM, chambers of commerce and other business organizations to cultivate research, activities, seminars and partnerships

  • Assist in development, implementation and presentation of training and related materials

  • Communicate with a wide range of customers and vendors

Reef Operations

  • Carry out non-destructive testing such as tests for cracks on the memorial reef at sea

  • Cut and weld steel, using underwater welding equipment, jigs, and supports

  • Splice rope and build mooring and marker buoy systems

  • Descend into water with the aid of diver helpers, using scuba gear or diving suits

  • Install pilings, footings for piers and bridges, mooring buoys, plaques/placements

  • Obtain information about diving tasks and environmental conditions

  • Operate underwater video, sonar, recording, and related equipment to investigate underwater structures or marine life

  • Recover objects by placing rigging around sunken objects, hooking rigging to crane lines, and operating winches, derricks, or cranes to raise objects

  • Repair boats, bridge foundations, and structures below the water line, using caulk, bolts, and hand tools

  • Take appropriate safety precautions, such as monitoring dive lengths and depths, and registering with authorities before diving expeditions begin

  • Manage delivery and storage of cremated remains

  • Take test samples and photographs to assess the condition of vessels and structures

  • Remove rubbish and pollution from the sea

  • Set up dive sites for recreational instruction

  • Supervise and train other divers

  • Maintain company boat, dock, boat tools, supplies and accessories

  • Maintain scuba gear tools, supplies and accessories

  • Assist in inventing reef features, building molds and writing scripts as necessary

  • Performs other duties as assigned or needed

EDUCATIONAL/Experience/MINIMUM Requirements

Education

  • High school education, GED equivalent

License

  • Advanced level SCUBA certification

  • Valid driver’s license

Experience

  • Over 200 logged dives minimum

  • Experience teaching, presenting or speaking in public

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to follow instructions and procedures

  • Ability to operate equipment properly and safely

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

  • Ability to work underwater

  • Effective communication skills

  • Logical problem solving skills

  • Handyman skills

  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions

Work Environment

  • Work indoors and outdoors during all seasons and weather conditions

  • Limited amount of local and/or multiple location traveling required

  • Epoxy used to secure plaques and placements

  • Rubber and release agents used to produce molds for placements

  • Cement in the production of concrete placements

  • Cleaning agents used to clean company boat/van/facility

Physical Demands

  • Physical fitness, endurance and ability associated with the diving and underwater work

  • May come in contact with jellyfish, Portuguese Man-of-War, surgeon fish or sea lice

Work Hours

  • Working beyond “standard” hours as the need arises

  • Travel up to 25%
